L. D. WOOSLEY
1915-1990
PHILIPPINES
Approved 1952
Loral Douglas Woosley remains the
only missionary ever approved in abstentia by the BBF. In 1952 he
had assisted many missionaries from his California pastorate and
was so well known and recommended to Missions Director Fred S.
Donnelson that, when he surrendered to go to the Philippines the
week before the Denton Thanksgiving Fellowship Meeting, Dr.
Donnelson asked the committee to interview him by phone, approve
him immediately, and get him started on deputation.
His life's work was building the
Bethany Baptist Church, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines, which
remains one of the strongest of that country's many strong
churches, sponsoring a liberal arts college, a Bible college, and
Christian academy along with over two dozen mission churches, and
many granddaughter churches, all functioning under Filipino
leadership which he trained. His widow, Mava Lee, continues to
serve in the church and as a BBFI missionary. Both his daughter,
Lora Lee Hooge, and his son, Robert A. Woosley, are likewise
missionaries to the Philippines.
